All you need to know about Sri Lanka's qualification scenarios for 2023 world cup.

(Poornama Edirisooriya writes)

Sri Lanka will take on Afghanistan today as their penultimate series in World Cup Super League 2020-2023. The three-match ODI series willbe played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on 25th, 27th and 30th November. What are the results Sri Lanka should look forward in this series as far as World Cup Super League is concerned.

Nothing less than 3-0 is needed for Sri Lanka. Let's dig in to that.

Here is the clarification:

Sri Lanka only have 6 remaining matches in WCSL. Next 3 is vs New Zealand in New Zealand. So,tougher comparing to these 3 matches.

Sri Lanka currently sitting at no 10 with 62 points.

West Indies currently at no 8 with 88 pts having complete their matches. To go to NZ with a safer condition, SL has to win all these 3 matches vs Afg.

SA who is behind us, have couple more series against Ned and Eng at home. So, we can expect that they will climb the ladder as well.

Ireland, who are at no 9, one ahead of Sri Lanka have 3 remaining matches vs Bangladesh. If they can win those 3 matches that'll be 98 points for them as well.

What if we miss direct qualification ?

Only 8 teams will get direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup. India is already qualified as the hosts and remaining 7 teams will be decided after the end of World Cup Super League cycle.

The bottom 5 teams of WCSL may have to play qualifying series which will be played in June and July 2023 in Zimbabwe. Then the two finalists in qualifying series will get the qualification for the 2023 world cup.

If Sri Lanka had to play the qualifying series, that would mark the lowest point of Sri Lankan ODI history. Having won a ODI world cup, played two ODI world cup finals, Sri Lanka shouln't fall that much.

With all of these circumstances, Sri Lanka left nothing than winning.

On the other hand, one win would put Afghanistan in 2023 WC most probably.

Hoping for the best and asking Pallekele to be kind for Sri lanka, Let's march in to the Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan ODI series.
